In this lesson, we will explore the relationship between animals and art. Students will learn to appreciate various artistic interpretations of animals and develop their own ideas for creating animal-themed artwork.
Ask each student to choose an animal they feel a connection with. They will create an artistic postcard featuring that animal by following these guidelines:
Imagery: Use the photographs or images as inspiration. Think about how to represent the animal through colour, form, and texture.
Message: On the back, students should write a short fictional story or a fun fact about their chosen animal. Encourage creativity! The story could either highlight a day in the life of the animal or a whimsical tale of adventure.
Presentation: Once each student has completed their postcard, they will share their artwork with the class. They will briefly explain their artistic choices and what they learned about the animal while creating their postcard.
Finally, set up a “postcard gallery” on a bulletin board or wall in the classroom. This display will serve as a visual representation of the students’ artwork and provide an opportunity for classmates to appreciate and discuss each other’s interpretations of animals in art.
This activity will lead us to dive deeper into various artistic styles and historical contexts in which animals have inspired artists throughout the ages. We’ll explore different mediums, ranging from classical paintings to modern interpretations, and discuss how our perceptions of animals inform our creative process.
This engaging introduction to our animal-themed art lesson sets the stage for a deeper exploration of artistic expression. It encourages individual creativity, story-telling, and fosters a connection between the students' art and the natural world.
