To introduce preschool children to the concepts of friendship, feelings, and sharing, aligned with PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education.
Start the lesson with a cheerful welcome song to set a positive atmosphere. Encourage the children to sing along while clapping their hands and tapping their feet.
Introduce the soft toy or puppet as a new friend. You could say:
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we have a very special friend joining us! This is [Name of the Toy/Puppet]. Let’s see if [he/she/they] has come to learn about being friends with us!"
Hold up the flashcards, one by one. For each card, ask the children to mimic the expression or describe a time they felt that way. For example:
Once the children are warmed up, tell them that friendship is all about sharing feelings and kindness. Next, introduce the heart-shaped poster:
Encourage each child to share a word or draw a little picture on the poster using crayons or markers. This will help them express their thoughts and start the conversation about friendships.
Wrap up the introduction by summarising the importance of friendship in a positive way. Transition into the main lesson activities by saying:
"Now that we’ve started filling our heart with all the wonderful things about being friends, let’s learn more about how we can be good friends to each other!"
This engaging start not only introduces important PSHE concepts but also creates a warm and inclusive environment where all children feel valued and encouraged to express themselves.
