Your mission today is to discover how to use the concept of FAST to solve problems with these objects!

2. What Does FAST Mean?

FAST stands for:

• Find: Look for the right numbers to work with.
• Add: Add the quantities you find together.
• Solve: Solve a problem using addition.
• Total: Find the total amount at the end!

3. Let's Get Started!

Gather Around:

• Get into small groups and take turns picking objects from the box. As you pick one, call out how many of that object you got.

Find:

• Count the objects together. How many balls did we pick? How many coins?

Add:

• Now, take the numbers you found and add them together! For example, if you picked 5 balls and 3 coins, what do you think the total is?

Solve:

• Write down your addition on a piece of paper. Can anyone solve the problem before the timer runs out?

Total:

• After everyone has worked through their objects, let’s share our totals! How many objects did each group find, and what was the total when we added them all together?
