Warm-Up Activity: Pizza Party!

Materials Needed

• A paper plate (or a circle cut out of cardboard)
• A pair of scissors
• A crayon or markers

Instructions

1. Create Your Pizza: Take your paper plate and draw your favourite toppings on it. This could be anything from pepperoni to mushrooms – make it your own!

2. Cut Your Pizza: Now, let’s pretend we are sharing this pizza with friends! Using your scissors, cut the plate into 2 equal parts. This will help us understand fractions better!

   • Ask the students, “If we cut the pizza into 2 parts, what do we call each part?”
   • Elicit the answer, “That’s right! Each part is called a half.”

3. Sharing Time: Now, if we want to share this pizza with 4 friends, how many pieces do we need to cut it into?

   • Let students guess and then encourage them to cut their pizza into 4 equal parts to see how many quarters they can make.
