A Fun Introduction to Fractions!
Objective:
To introduce Year 1 students to the concept of fractions in a fun and engaging way.
Warm-Up Activity: "Fruit Pizza Party!"
Materials Needed:
- Paper plates (one for each student)
- Coloured paper or paper cut-outs of various fruits (e.g., apples, bananas, strawberries)
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Markers or crayons
Step 1: Create a "Pizza"
-
Explain the Activity:
- Begin by telling the class: "Today, we’re going to make our own fruit pizzas! But here’s the twist! We’re going to share our pizzas with friends and learn about fractions at the same time!"
-
Distribute Materials:
- Hand out the paper plates to each student.
- Give them the coloured paper cut-outs of different fruits and ask them to pick their favourites.
-
Decorate the "Pizza":
- Instruct the students to stick their fruit cut-outs on their paper plates to create their very own fruit pizza.
Step 2: Introduce Fractions
-
Draw the Attention:
- Once the students have decorated their fruit pizzas, gather them in a circle. Hold up one of the pizzas and say, “Wow! What if I told you we can share this delicious pizza with our friends?”
-
Demonstrate Sharing:
- Using your own pizza (or a paper model), carefully cut it into halves, quarters, or eighths, depending on the level and understanding of your class.
- Explain: "When we cut our pizza into two equal parts, we call each part a half. If we cut it into four equal pieces, each piece is called a quarter."
-
Real-Life Connections:
- Ask students if they have ever shared a pizza or cake at a birthday party or family gathering. “How did you share it? Did everyone get the same amount? What do we call each piece?”
Step 3: Group Discussion
-
Engage the Students:
- Encourage students to talk about their favourite types of pizza or cake.
- Probe questions like: “If we had 8 slices of cake and you had 4 slices, how much of the cake did you eat?”
-
Introduce the Vocabulary:
- Introduce the terms whole, half, and quarter, writing them on the board and illustrating with physical examples.
Step 4: Conclude the Lesson
-
Wrap-Up:
- Congratulate the students on creating their fruit pizzas and learning about fractions.
- Encourage them to think about sharing and fractions each time they enjoy a treat with their friends and family.
-
Next Steps:
- Let them know that in the upcoming lessons, they will explore more about fractions with fun games and activities!
By starting the lesson with an interactive and relatable activity, students will have a wonderful foundation for understanding fractions in a lively and enjoyable context.
