The Beginnings of Abstract Art: Lesson Introduction

Welcome to the World of Abstract Expression

As we embark on our journey through the fascinating realm of Abstract Art, let’s start with a thought-provoking question:

"What does it mean to see without a lens?"

Activity: Visual Meditation

Before we dive into history and theory, I invite you to indulge in a brief visual meditation. Follow these steps:

  1. Find Your Space: Ensure you are seated comfortably and have a clear surface to work on.
  2. Gather Your Materials: Please pick up some paper and a few drawing tools—these can be pencils, pastels, or even paints.
  3. Close Your Eyes: Take three deep breaths to centre yourself. Inhale… and exhale… allow your mind to clear and your thoughts to drift.
  4. Open Your Eyes: Now, with a blank canvas before you, allow your hand to move freely. Don't think about shapes or forms—simply respond to the music of your mind. You can listen to some ambient music in the background if you prefer; it may help liberate your creative side.
  5. Embrace the Result: After five minutes of creative expression, take a moment to observe what you've created. What shapes emerged? What feelings did your hand express without the constraints of realism?

Discussing Your Experience

After the exercise, we’ll gather in small groups to discuss your experiences. Here are some guiding questions:

Transitioning to Abstract Art

As we share our insights, let's transition into our primary focus today: the origins of abstract art. You’ll notice that many pioneering abstract artists employed similar techniques of free expression, challenging the conventions of realism to convey deeper emotions and ideas. Our exploration will reveal how movements such as Expressionism and Cubism laid the groundwork for what we understand as Abstract Art today.

By connecting your own creative impulses to the historical context, we will gain a richer understanding of the significance of abstraction in the art world. Let's get started!
