Lesson Introduction: The Art of Public Speaking
Objective:
To engage Year 6 students in understanding the significance of public speaking and to ignite their interest in developing their speaking skills through a fun and interactive activity.
Opening Activity: "Speak Like a Pro!"
Instructions:
- Gather the Students: Ask all students to come to the front of the classroom, forming a circle.
- Introduce the Activity: Explain that today’s lesson is about the art of public speaking. Public speaking isn't just for adults; it's a skill that everyone can use!
- Icebreaker – Movie Announcement:
- Start the lesson by saying you will give a brief announcement about a "new blockbuster movie" that they're all going to create together.
- Each student will take turns adding a sentence to the announcement, but they must speak clearly and confidently, imagining they are giving a live press release in front of their fans.
Example:
- Teacher: “Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention! Today, we are excited to announce the next big hit, The Brave Adventures of Super Penguin!”
- Student 1: “Super Penguin saves the day in the icy world of Antarctica!”
- Student 2: “With the help of his friends, they face off against the villainous Ice Queen!”
- Continue until everyone has contributed.
Discussion:
After completing the announcement, discuss the following questions with the class:
- How did it feel to speak in front of the group?
- What was challenging about contributing to the announcement?
- Why do you think public speaking is an important skill to have?
Transition to Lesson Content:
Wrap up the activity by saying that just like in their announcement, every person has a unique voice and story to share. Today, we will explore how to effectively communicate our ideas and connect with our audience through the principles of public speaking.
This interactive start not only eases any anxiety about speaking in front of peers but also encourages creativity and collaboration.
