Lesson Introduction: Partitioning Shapes

Objective

Today, we are going to dive into the exciting world of shapes and learn how to partition them! We’ll find out how to split them into equal parts, just like cutting a delicious pizza or sharing a yummy cake!

Hook: The Magic of Sharing Shapes

The Scenario

Imagine it's your birthday, and you have a big, colorful cake in front of you. Your friends are waiting to share it with you, but first, you want to make sure everyone gets an equal slice!

Activity: The Great Cake Challenge!

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Paper plates (one for each student)
    • Colored paper circles (one for each student)
    • Scissors
    • Crayons or markers
  2. Instructions:

    • Each student will receive a colored paper circle that represents the cake.
    • Ask: “How many friends do you want to share your cake with today?” (Elicit responses – for example, 3 friends.)
    • Challenge: “Now let’s figure out how we can divide that cake into equal parts!”
    • Each student can cut their circle (cake) into 4 equal parts (like quarters) or 3 equal parts (like thirds), depending on how many friends they want to share with.
    • After cutting, they can decorate each piece and share their creations with the class.

Discussion Questions:

Transition

Now that we’ve practiced partitioning shapes with our cakes, let’s learn how to do this with different shapes on paper and explore more ways to divide them into equal parts! Are you ready to be shape partitioning experts?
