Lesson Script: Playing Mystery Block

Lesson Overview

Welcome to our exciting lesson on playing mystery blocks! In this 30-minute session, we'll engage kindergartners in a fun and interactive way to explore basic mathematics concepts such as shapes, numbers, and problem-solving skills through the use of mystery blocks.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Greeting: "Hello, friends! Today we are going to play with our mystery blocks. These blocks are special because they can help us learn about shapes and numbers."

  2. Discussion:

    • Show students different shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle) and colors (red, blue, yellow, green).
    • Ask: “Can anyone tell me the name of this shape?” as you hold up each block.
    • Prompt them to describe the color of each shape.
  3. Objective Awareness:

    • Explain: "We will use these blocks to play games and solve some puzzles together!"

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Activity 1: Shape Sorting (10 minutes)

  1. Instructions:

    • Spread the mystery blocks across a large play area or table.
    • Ask students to group the blocks by shape and color.
  2. Guidance:

    • Walk around and encourage conversations:
      • "What shapes do you see?"
      • "Can you find all the red squares?"
  3. Wrap-Up:

    • Gather students back together and show them one group of sorted blocks.
    • Ask questions like: “How many circles did we find?” and guide them to count.

Activity 2: Number Match (10 minutes)

  1. Instructions:

    • Use counting mats numbered from 1 to 10.
    • Ask each student to take a small number of blocks and place them on the corresponding number on their mat.
  2. Practice Counting:

    • Encourage each student to count the blocks out loud as they place them on the mat.
    • Move around and help them if needed: “How many do you have on the number 4 mat?”
  3. Group Reflection:

    • Ask, “Who can tell me how many blocks are on the number 6 mat?” and have some students describe their mats.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

  1. Review:

    • Summarize the shapes and numbers learned today.
    • Praise students for their efforts and teamwork in sorting and counting.
  2. Teaser for Next Lesson:

    • “Next time, we’ll create our own mystery block patterns! Can you think of a fun pattern to make?”

  1. Instructions:

    • Go on a shape and color hunt in your home or outside!
    • Find and draw at least 3 different shapes and color them.
