Lesson Introduction: The First Fleet

A Time-Travel Adventure

Objective: To engage Year 3 students in the history of Australia by exploring the journey of the First Fleet.

Setting the Scene

Begin with a Story
Start the lesson by gathering the students in a circle on the floor. Dim the lights a little to create a cosy atmosphere. Hold up a large, illustrated book titled "The Journey of the First Fleet".

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to go on a fantastic-time travel adventure to learn about the First Fleet! Imagine you’re getting ready to board a big ship for a long journey across the ocean. But where are we going? What do we need to pack? Let’s find out together!"

Engage Their Imagination

Interactive Activity: Packing for the Adventure
Have a large suitcase prop or a backpack ready. Invite students to come up and “pack” items they think would be important for a long sea journey.

As students suggest items (such as clothes, food, and tools), place pictures of these items in or around the suitcase.

Introduce the Topic

Transition to History
Once you have a selection of items packed, explain that on May 13, 1787, over 1,400 people boarded the First Fleet to sail from England to Australia.

"Now that we are all packed and ready to go, let’s set sail to learn about who was on the First Fleet, what they experienced during their journey, and how they changed Australia forever!"

Activity Prompt

Follow-Up
Tell the students that, over the next few lessons, they will learn about different people who came on the First Fleet and their stories. Hand out a simple map of the journey they will discuss and invite them to draw symbols representing the items they packed during the lesson.

This engaging start not only captures their imaginations but also sets the foundation for learning about Australian history and the significance of the First Fleet in a fun and interactive way.
