Good morning, class! Today, we are going to embark on a delicious adventure to learn about fractions. Have you ever been to a pizzeria? Well, imagine you're helping to run a busy pizzeria called "Fraction Pies," where we not only make yummy pizzas but also learn how to share them with our friends!
To kick off our lesson, let's start with a riddle. Look at this picture of a pizza:
If I have one whole pizza and I want to share it with 4 friends, how many pieces should I cut it into?
Pause for answers from students, encouraging them to think critically and explain their reasoning.
Now, let’s imagine we have that whole pizza. If we cut it into 4 equal parts, each part is called a quarter. We write that as 1/4. So, if you take one slice, you have one-quarter of the pizza.
Now, it’s your turn to become pizza chefs! In front of you, there are templates of pizzas. You will create your own fraction pizzas using coloured paper.
After we finish creating our pizzas, we will gather together and share what we’ve made. You will all get to explain the fractions of your pizzas to your classmates!
Remember, fractions are all about sharing and understanding parts of a whole. So, let’s dive into our pizza-making adventure and learn all about fractions while having fun!
By the end of our lesson, you will be able to:
Let’s get started! 🍕
