The sun hung high over Civic Square, casting a warm glow that promised a successful start for AJ, Liam, Simay, and Onyx’s business ventures. However, the excitement soon faded as they gathered at their usual spot beneath the old oak tree, a shared sense of unease settling among them.
“I’ve been jotting down my supply list,” AJ said, his brow furrowed. “But every time I look at it, I realize I need more than I thought. Lemons, sugar, cups… it adds up fast.”
Liam nodded, a worried expression on his face. “Same here. The supplies for my crafts aren’t cheap either. Wood, paints, and tools—we need to figure this out, or we can’t even start.”
Simay sighed, crossing her arms. “I thought opening a pet wash would be affordable, but the shampoos, towels, and other equipment are going to cost a lot. I didn’t think about transportation costs to pick up the supplies either.”
Onyx remained silent for a moment, her usual bright demeanor dimmed. She was the baker of the group, and as she reviewed her ingredients list, her heart sank. “Flour, sugar, eggs... It looks like I'll need at least $50 for just the basics. We really need to add it all up.”
Taking a deep breath, AJ opened his notebook. “Okay, let’s list everything we need and see what we are looking at in total. Maybe we can come up with a plan?”
As they began writing down their individual needs, their lists started to grow longer than anticipated. “For my lemonade stand, I’ll need lemons, sugar, cups, ice—all of which might cost around $30,” AJ estimated.
“Crafts materials for me—wood, paint, brushes—will come to at least $40,” Liam said, tapping his pen against the paper.
“I’ll say around $50 for all my pet wash supplies,” Simay added, feeling more anxious with each addition. “And we’ll need space and marketing too!”
Onyx looked at her list and sighed. “If I want to make a decent batch of treats, I’ll need about $60 for the ingredients. Totals are stacking. Anyone have a calculator?”
With all eyes on Liam, he pulled out his phone. After a few taps, he looked up, panic flashing in his eyes. “Okay, so if we add those up… that’s $30 + $40 + $50 + $60…,” he stammered. “That’s $180 total.”
“We don’t have that kind of money, do we?” Simay worriedly glanced between them. They’d all chipped in what they could, but each of them was saving up for their specific projects and had already exhausted their funds.
“Okay, we need a budget strategy,” AJ proposed, trying to regain control of the situation. “What if we pooled our money together? We’re only going to get one chance to launch. We could buy in bulk for certain supplies.”
“That could work,” Onyx said, her spirits lifting slightly, “like buying flour and sugar together. We might even save money that way.”
Liam’s eyes brightened at the idea. “And we can split costs for marketing too! Flyers and social media can be shared instead of individuals footing the bill.”
Simay clapped her hands excitedly. “Great idea! We can design a group flyer that promotes all our businesses. That might pull in more customers!”
With newfound determination, they set to work brainstorming how to approach Civic Square together: how to combine their efforts, share resources, and make each shop complement the others. Their worries still lingered, but so did their resolve.
“Let’s meet again with numbers and a plan,” AJ said, wrapping up their meeting. “We’ve got this, team!”
As they stood together, partially relieved and excited, the prospect of teamwork ignited the idea that through collaboration, their individual challenges could turn into a shared success.
