What topicCreate a Day 2 Core Block lesson for a multi-age homeschool group (grades K–5) using the weekly theme “Business & Finance.” The mentor text is “Grand Opening: A Civic Square Story,” where AJ, Liam, Simay, and Onyx brainstorm ideas for their new stores. Today’s lesson should focus on retelling events from the planning scenes, writing a star detail sentence about a store idea, using commas in a list, and rounding multiple prices to find a total. Make sure to include a student-friendly “I Can” statement for each subject (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Math), a detailed mini-lesson for each subject (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Math), teacher modeling, guided practice, independent tasks for K–2 and 3–5, and a final reflection prompt about why planning is important for a business. Day 2 Core Block Lesson Plan: Business & Finance

Grade Level: K–5 Multi-Age Homeschool Group

Lesson Duration: 30 Minutes

Learning Objectives

Hook (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson by asking students to think about what types of stores they like to visit. Quick share: "What is your favorite store, and what do you like about it?" Write their answers on the board. Draw a connection between their favorites and the importance of planning when starting a new store.

Teaching Point

Today’s lesson is focused on how AJ, Liam, Simay, and Onyx brainstormed for their stores in “Grand Opening: A Civic Square Story.” We will look at retelling events, writing engaging sentences, using commas, and rounding prices.

Reading Mini-Lesson

Modeling (7 minutes): Read aloud the selected scenes from "Grand Opening: A Civic Square Story" that describe the brainstorming process. Pause periodically to discuss key events and guide students to notice how the characters think through their ideas.

Guided Practice (3 minutes): Ask students to retell the events they just heard in pairs. Encourage them to use phrases like "First, they..." and "Then they..."

Writing Mini-Lesson

Modeling (5 minutes): Display a sentence on the board, such as "Onyx wants to open a bakery that sells cookies and cakes." Discuss what makes this a "star detail" sentence. Point out its specificity and interest.

Guided Practice (3 minutes): Students will think of their store ideas and share them with a partner. Then, they will each write a star detail sentence about their store on a mini whiteboard.

Grammar Mini-Lesson

Modeling (5 minutes): Introduce the concept of using commas in a list. Present a sample sentence: "We will sell bread, muffins, and pastries." Break it down and explain the rule for using commas.

Guided Practice (3 minutes): Students will write their own lists of items their stores will sell, making sure to include commas correctly. Share a few examples with the group.

Math Mini-Lesson

Modeling (5 minutes): Explain how to round prices to the nearest dollar. Use an example and demonstrate rounding numbers like $3.49 to $3 and $4.80 to $5.

Guided Practice (3 minutes): Provide students with a list of item prices. Ask them to round each price to the nearest dollar and find the total.

Independent Work (5 minutes)

For K-2:

Students will write their star detail sentence, make a list of items their stores will sell, and round prices of 3 items of their choice from a provided list.

For 3-5:

Students will repeat the same tasks, but their writing needs to include additional details. They should also calculate the total of the rounded prices from at least five items.

Reflection (2 minutes)

Ask students to reflect on why planning is important for a business. Prompt them with the question: "Why do you think AJ, Liam, Simay, and Onyx needed to plan their stores?" Allow them to share their thoughts in pairs before summarizing as a group.

Materials Needed

This structured lesson provides engaging and developmentally appropriate activities focused on reading, writing, grammar, and math within the context of the theme “Business & Finance.”
