Objectives

Materials Needed
- Copy of The Lion and the Bird (one per student or shared copy)

Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting and Introduction: Begin the lesson by greeting the students and explaining the purpose of the lesson.
- Activate Prior Knowledge: Ask students what they think a "main idea" is. Write their responses on the whiteboard.
- Explain the Concept: Introduce the definitions of "main idea" as the most important point of the story and "supporting details" as the facts or examples that help explain or support that idea.
Read Aloud (10 minutes)
- Reading the Book: Read The Lion and the Bird aloud to the class. Use expressiveness to engage students and have them listen carefully.
- Ask Questions While Reading:
- “What do you think is happening right now?”
- “Who are the main characters?”
- “What do you think is important about their friendship?”
Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Discuss Main Idea: After reading, ask students what they think the main idea of the story is. Write it on the whiteboard.
- Example: "The main idea is about friendship and helping others."
- Explore Supporting Details: Invite students to share details from the story that support the main idea. Record these on the whiteboard as well.
- Example: “The Lion helps the Bird when it is hurt.”
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Graphic Organizer Activity:
- Distribute a worksheet with a graphic organizer divided into two sections: one for Main Idea and another for Supporting Details.
- Instruct students to draw a picture for the main idea in one box and write or draw supporting details in the other boxes.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Share and Discuss: Have a few students share their graphic organizers with the class. Encourage them to explain their thoughts on the main idea and the details they included.
- Review Key Concepts: Review the definitions of main idea and supporting details one more time.
- Wrap-Up: Thank the students for their great participation and remind them that they can use these skills when they read any book!
