Introduction to Grid System Coordinates

Objective

Today, we're diving into the exciting world of grid system coordinates! By the end of the lesson, you'll understand how to locate points on a grid using coordinates and how to create your own grid-based maps.

Hook: The Treasure Map Adventure

Imagine This:

You’re an adventurous pirate on the lookout for hidden treasure! You’ve just unearthed an ancient treasure map. But wait! This isn't your ordinary map; it’s marked with mysterious coordinates! The treasure lies at the point marked as (4, 3) on a grid. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to use the grid system to find the treasure!

A Grid System Setup:

Before we embark on our quest, let's create our very own treasure map grid. Follow these steps:

  1. Draw Your Grid:

    • Take a blank piece of paper and draw a large square with 10 rows and 10 columns, creating 100 smaller boxes.
    • Label the horizontal axis (bottom) with numbers 0 to 10 and the vertical axis (side) with numbers 0 to 10.
  2. Mark the Treasure!:

    • Use the coordinates (4, 3) to locate the treasure. Starting from the origin (0, 0), move 4 spaces to the right (along the x-axis) and then 3 spaces up (along the y-axis).
  3. X Marks the Spot!:

    • Mark the treasure’s location with a bright ‘X’. This is how we identify points on a grid using coordinates!

Connection to Coordinates:

In this lesson, we will learn that each point on the grid is identified by a pair of numbers (x, y). The first number tells us how far to move right (or left) along the horizontal axis, and the second number tells us how far to move up (or down) along the vertical axis.

Now It’s Your Turn!

Get ready to create your own coordinates and treasure map. We’ll work together to plot more points and learn how to read and write coordinates, as you embark on your quest to become a master navigator!
