Lesson Starter: Fun with Fractions!

Introduction

Welcome, Year 2 students! Today, we’re diving into the amazing world of fractions! To get us started, let’s embark on a fun adventure that will help you understand what fractions are all about. Are you ready? Let’s go!

The Fraction Pizza Party

Materials Needed:

Activity Steps:

  1. Imagine a Pizza: Picture your favourite pizza for a moment. Is it a large, cheesy Hawaiian or a delicious pepperoni? Today, we’re going to create our own pizzas using paper plates!

  2. Making Your Pizza:

    • Take your paper plate and divide it into different sections with your markers or crayons. You can create as many slices as you want! Remember, a whole pizza is one complete plate!
    • Now, let’s add toppings! Use the paper pizza toppings you have and glue them onto your pizza slices. Try to make your pizza as colourful and tasty as possible!
  3. Let’s Talk Fractions:

    • Now that you have your pizza ready, let’s look at it closely. If you have 4 slices in total and you decide to add pepperoni to 2 of them, we can say that 2 out of 4 slices have pepperoni. This is a fraction! We write it as 2/4.
    • Ask the students: “What fraction of your pizza has toppings? How many slices did you decorate?”

Wrap-up Discussion:

After everyone has created their pizzas, gather together for a discussion:

Conclusion

Today was all about understanding fractions through something delicious and fun! Remember, fractions are a way to show parts of a whole, just like slices of pizza!

Let's get ready to explore more about how we can use fractions in our everyday lives! Who's excited to learn more?

Teacher’s Note:

Be sure to remind students that fractions are everywhere, and this fun pizza-making activity will help them visualise and better understand the fundamental concept of dividing a whole into parts. Encourage creativity and participation and keep the atmosphere joyous and interactive!
