A Fun Start to Our Numeral Formation Lesson

📖 Welcome to Numberland!

Let's Explore the Magical World of Numbers!

Kia ora, tamariki! Today, we are going to embark on an exciting adventure into the land of numbers as we learn how to form our numerals from 1 to 10! But first, let’s get our imaginations going!

🎈 The Balloon Adventure

Imagine you are at a fantastic fair with colourful balloons floating all around you. Each balloon has a number on it, and it's our job to catch them and learn their shapes!

Activity 1: Catch the Number Balloons

  1. Set the Scene:

    • Gather around in a circle and close your eyes. Picture yourself at the fair. Can you hear the exciting sounds? (Pause to let them imagine.)
  2. Describe the Balloons:

    • Now, let's think about the balloons. They are bright and filled with air, just like our ideas!
  3. The Challenge:

    • I will say a number, and you have to “catch” that number's balloon by forming it in the air with your fingers. For example, if I say “3”, show me how to make a '3' in the air!
  4. Share the Fun:

    • After everyone has had a turn, we can go around sharing what balloons we caught and how they looked!

😄 Let's Create Our Own Number Balloon Art!

After our fun catching balloons, it’s time to make our very own number balloon art!

Materials Needed:

Steps:

  1. Draw and Cut:

    • Choose a number between 1 and 10. Draw a big balloon shape on your colourful paper, and then write your chosen number inside it.
  2. Decorate:

    • Use your markers to make your balloon shine! You can add patterns, smiley faces, or even a string if you like.
  3. Show and Tell:

    • Once everyone has created their balloon art, we’ll have a little “Show and Tell”! Each of you can show your number balloon and tell us what number it is and how you made it.

🎓 Review and Reflect

To finish our lesson, we will sit together and talk about what we learned today. What numbers do we like the most? How can we use these numbers every day?

💡 Conclusion

And remember, tamariki, numbers are all around us! Just like those playful balloons at the fair, you can find them everywhere. Always keep your eyes open to the wonderful world of numbers!

Whakataukī (Proverb): "He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata."
(What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.)

Let’s move forward together in our learning!
