Lesson Introduction: Exploring Capacity

Setting the Scene

Theme: Welcome to the Mystery of the Magic Jugs!

Today, we're going to embark on a fun adventure to discover the world of capacity in mathematics. Imagine if each of us had a magic jug that could hold different amounts of liquid. Will your jug be able to hold more juice than mine? Let’s find out together!

The Magic Jug Challenge

What You’ll Need:

The Challenge:

  1. Gather Around: Let’s sit in a circle with our containers.
  2. Pick Your Jug: Each of you will choose a container and make a guess about how much water it can hold. Is it a small, medium, or large jug?
  3. Pouring Time: I'll demonstrate how to use the measuring jug to pour water into each of our magic jugs. As we pour, let’s observe and compare how full each jug gets!
  4. Discussion: After each pour, we’ll discuss:
    • Which jug held the most water?
    • Which one held the least?
    • How do we know how much each jug can hold?

Getting Creative:

To make it more exciting, let’s pretend we’re filling our magic jugs with favourite potions! What if your jug was a special potion container? What special powers would your potion have if it was full? Would it help you fly, or make you invisible?

Wrap-up:

At the end of our exploration, we will share our findings, write down what we’ve learned about capacity, and even draw our favourite magic jugs!

Are you ready to discover the secrets of capacity and see which jug has the most magic? Let's get started!
