Lesson Starter: The Mystery Box Challenge
Objective:
To introduce students to quantitative methods through an interactive and engaging activity that demonstrates the practical applications of data collection and analysis.
Setup:
Before the lesson, prepare a mystery box filled with everyday objects (e.g., pens, marbles, coins, paper clips) and some paper and pens for each student. Aim to include 10–15 different items in various quantities, ensuring some are common and others are less so.
Activity Steps:

Introduction (5 mins):
- Begin the lesson with a brief introduction about quantitative methods. Explain that in this session, students will learn how to collect, analyse, and interpret data, which is vital in numerous fields including business, economics, and social sciences.

Mystery Box Reveal (10 mins):
- Present the mystery box to the class and stir curiosity.
- Ask students to guess what’s inside the box based on its weight and sound when shaken. Record their guesses on the board.
- Once excitement builds, reveal the contents of the box without disclosing the exact quantities.

Data Collection (15 mins):
- Divide students into small groups and instruct them to estimate the quantity of each item they perceive in the box.
- After estimating, ask each group to select a few items to count accurately.
- Groups then compile their results, where each group lists the estimated quantities alongside the actual ones.

- Reconvene as a class and discuss discrepancies between estimates and actual counts.
- Encourage students to think about reasons for the variations in their estimates.
- Introduce concepts such as mean, median, and mode by using the collected data. Conduct calculations as a class to illustrate how quantitative methods are employed in real-life scenarios.
Closure (5 mins):
- Wrap up the activity by highlighting how data collection and analysis helps make informed decisions in various professions.
