Today, we’ll dive into the world of subtraction through an exciting “Magic Show” where we'll see how numbers can vanish!
Before the class starts, place the toy animals in the bag or box but keep it closed. Make sure they are visible to the students when you reveal them for the “magic trick”.
Gather the Students: Invite your students to come sit in a circle on the floor.
Show the Bag/Box: Hold up the closed bag or box and say, “Hello, everyone! Welcome to our magical subtraction show!”
Introduce the Objects: Open the bag or box and pull out 5 toy animals, showing each one to the class. Say, “Look at all these 5 toy animals! Let’s count them together! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!”
The Magic Word: Hold the magic wand above the animals and say, “With a little magic, let’s make some of these animals disappear!”
The First Subtraction: Ask a student to help. “Let’s take away 2 animals! Which ones should we make disappear?” Let them choose the animals and set them aside.
Count the Remaining Animals: Once the 2 animals are set aside, say, “How many animals do we have left?” Count them together: “1, 2, 3!”
Introduce the New Word:
Write on the whiteboard:
5 - 2 = 3
Explain that “5 minus 2 equals 3”.
Invite a few more students to help with different numbers. Repeat the trick with different quantities (5, 3, and 2) so students can grasp the concept of taking away and counting how many are left.
Conclude the lesson by telling students that subtraction is a way of finding out what’s left after we take some away, just like in our magic show!
Encourage the students to practice by using their fingers or toys at home to explore subtraction in a fun way!
For the next lesson, you can prepare some subtraction worksheets with fun pictures that also relate to themes they like, like animals or toys.
This magical beginning will not only engage the students but also make subtraction an enjoyable topic to explore! Happy teaching!
