Mathematics Lesson Plan: 2D Shapes
Grade Level: Year 2
Duration: 30 Minutes
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: 2D Shapes
Curriculum Links: New Zealand Mathematics Curriculum, Geometry Strand
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and name basic 2D shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, and pentagon.
- Describe properties of these shapes (e.g., number of sides and corners).
- Sort and classify shapes based on their attributes.
Materials Needed
- Shape cards (pre-cut 2D shapes)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Shape sorting worksheets
- Coloured paper for shape creation activity
- Glue and scissors
Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin the lesson by asking students if they can name any shapes they see around them. Write their responses on the whiteboard. Through discussion, introduce the following shapes:
- Circle
- Triangle
- Square
- Rectangle
- Pentagon
Questions to Consider:
- How many sides does each shape have?
- Can anyone give an example of where we might see these shapes in real life?
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
Properties of 2D Shapes
Explain the properties of each shape. Use shape cards to show examples:
- Circle: No sides or corners.
- Triangle: 3 sides and 3 corners.
- Square: 4 equal sides and 4 corners.
- Rectangle: 4 sides (opposite sides are equal) and 4 corners.
- Pentagon: 5 sides and 5 corners.
Encourage students to repeat the names and properties of each shape as you discuss them.
Interactive Activity
Engage the students by asking them to find objects in the classroom that resemble each shape. Have them point out shapes and share their findings with the class.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Shape Sorting Activity
- Distribute shape sorting worksheets to each student.
- Instruct students to cut out shape cards provided earlier.
- Have them sort the shapes into groups by their properties (e.g., based on number of sides or corners).
- Walk around the room to assist any students who need help and to ensure they understand the sorting criteria.
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
Shape Creation Activity
Once the sorting activity is complete, instruct students to create their own shape using the coloured paper.
- Students will choose a shape (or a combination of shapes) to create an artwork piece.
- After creating their shape(s), ask them to write a sentence or two to describe their creation, focusing on its properties.
Closure (5 minutes)
Gather the students back together and have them share their creations with the class.
Reflection Questions:
- What was your favourite shape to create?
- How did you decide which shapes to use in your artwork?
Encourage students to reflect on the learning that happened in today's lesson by sharing what they learned about 2D shapes.
Assessment
Throughout the lesson, assess students’ understanding based on:
- Participation in discussions.
- Accuracy in sorting shapes.
- Creativity and explanation during the shape creation activity.
Notes for Future Lessons
Consider revisiting shapes in future lessons by integrating 3D shapes or exploring symmetry and patterns using 2D shapes.
