A Phonics Adventure: Treasure Hunt

Introduction

Kia ora, tamariki! Today, we’re going on a special adventure that will help us become phonics superheroes! Are you ready to find some treasure hidden in our classroom? Let’s go on a treasure hunt while learning about the sounds of letters!

The Challenge

Before we start our treasure hunt, let’s talk about what phonics is. Phonics helps us understand how letters and sounds work together to make words. Each letter has a sound that we can listen to. For example, the letter 'C' makes the /k/ sound like in “cat.”

Listen and Repeat

1. C - /k/ as in cat
2. A - /a/ as in apple
3. T - /t/ as in top

Now that we know some sounds, let’s go on our adventure!

Treasure Hunt Instructions

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

• Grab your special “Sound Finder” (this is just a piece of paper).
• You’ll also need your listening ears!

Step 2: Find the Hidden Letters

• I have hidden some special letters around the room. They might be on the floor, on a table, or stuck to the board.
• When you find a letter, say its name and its sound out loud!

Step 3: Collect the Treasure

• For every letter you find and sound out, write it down on your Sound Finder.
• When you believe you have collected all the letters, come back to our meeting spot.

Step 4: Sound it Out Together

• Once everyone is back, we will each take turns reading the letters we found and making words together using those sounds.
• Let’s build a treasure word using the letters we collected!

Conclusion

At the end of our adventure, we will have not just found treasures, but also treasures of sound. Phonics is all around us, and it helps us become great readers and writers. Let’s be phonics superheroes together!
