Gather the children in a cozy circle on the carpet. With a big smile, introduce the theme of the day:
"Hello, little explorers! Today, we are going on a magical adventure to discover the magic of words! Are you ready to meet some funny, silly, and wiggly words? Yay!"
Materials Needed:
Assemble the children around the treasure chest. Lift the lid and reveal the objects inside.
"Look at this treasure! Each item here is a special word that we can play with! Let's pick one together. Who wants to be the first to choose a treasure from our chest? Remember, each of these treasures has a secret!"
Once a child picks an item (e.g., a picture of a cat), hold it up for everyone to see.
"Do you hear that? The cat has a secret sound! Let's find the magic keys that can unlock our word treasure! The secret is called onset and rime.
The onset is the sound at the beginning of the word (the 'c' in cat), and the rime is the rest of the word (the 'at' in cat). Let's say it together: C(onset) + at(rime) = cat! Wow, we did it!"
Encourage the children to use the toy microphone. Invite them to say the words they find in the chest, identifying the onset and rime together.
For example, if they pick up a hat, encourage them to say: "The sound at the beginning is h and the rest is at!
Can you find another word that has the same rime, like bat? Let's rhyme together!"
Finish the introduction by expressing excitement about the journey ahead:
"Today, we will become onset rime superheroes, ready to recognize, rhyme, and create our own magical words! Are you ready? Let's begin our adventure!"
By using this interactive and hands-on approach, children will not only engage with the concept of onset rime but will also have fun while learning!
