Today, we will embark on an exciting adventure to learn about subtraction! We’ll discover how subtraction helps us solve problems in real-life situations, just like explorers do when hunting for treasure.
Imagine you are a daring treasure hunter in search of hidden treasure on a mysterious island. The sun is shining, and the waves are gently crashing against the shore as you stand in front of a giant treasure map dotted with clues. Each clue will help you uncover the treasure, but there’s a twist—you will need to use subtraction to find your way!
Start by displaying a colourful treasure map on the board. Draw a few landmarks, such as palm trees, caves, and mountains. Mark the treasure location with a big ‘X’.
Tell students about the different treasures hidden at each landmark. Here’s where we introduce subtraction! For instance:
However, each time the treasure hunter visits a landmark, they must leave a few treasures behind for other explorers.
Present the first challenge. For example:
“At the Palm Tree, you found 10 coins, but you must leave 2 behind for a friend. How many coins do you have now?”
Encourage students to use their fingers, draw pictures, or use counters to help visualize the subtraction.
Split the students into teams of explorers. Each team will receive a set of subtraction problems based on different landmarks. They will work together to solve the puzzles and uncover the next clue leading to the treasure!
By using subtraction, we will find that treasure is not just about counting what we have, but also understanding what we leave behind. Are you ready, young explorers? Let’s dive into our treasure hunt and master subtraction together!
Let’s start our adventure and see how many treasures we can find—and how well we can subtract to share with others!
