To engage Year 2 students in writing through a fun and imaginative storytelling activity.
Begin the lesson by holding up a large storybook and saying:
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going on a special adventure where we become storytellers! But first, let’s look at this mysterious book. I wonder what exciting stories it holds! Does anyone want to guess what it might be about?"
Allow students to share their ideas about the book's content, encouraging their imagination. After a few guesses, open the book to reveal a colourful illustration without reading the text.
Next, introduce the story prompt cards. Display a few of these around the classroom, each featuring a unique illustration or sentence starter, for example:
Ask the students to choose their favourite prompt or illustration and imagine where their adventure will take them.
Gather everyone on the carpet and lead a brainstorm session. Ask questions like:
Write down their ideas on the whiteboard, encouraging teamwork and creativity.
Once the brainstorming is complete, explain that now it's their turn to write their own mini-stories using their chosen prompts and character ideas. Hand out blank paper and crayons for them to illustrate their stories.
As students write, circulate around the classroom to offer support and encouragement. End the lesson by inviting a few students to share their stories with the class, reinforcing the joy of expressing themselves through writing.
Encourage students to think about their favourite part of the writing process:
Use this lesson to cultivate a love for writing and storytelling, integral parts of developing literacy skills in Year 2 learners in New Zealand.
