Lesson Plan: Early Years Numeracy
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Early Years Numeracy
Duration: 15 Minutes
Age Group: Preschool/Nursery
Intention of the Lesson
The intention of this lesson is to introduce young learners to basic numeracy skills through engaging activities. The focus will be on recognising numbers, counting objects, and developing a foundational understanding of quantity. By the end of the lesson, children will be able to identify numbers from 1 to 5 and count a small set of objects accurately.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Recognise the numbers 1 to 5.
- Count a small set of objects accurately.
- Associate numbers with corresponding quantities.
Resources Required
- Number cards (1 to 5)
- A collection of small objects (e.g., blocks, toy animals, buttons)
- A large sheet of paper or whiteboard
- Markers
Lesson Procedure
Introduction (3 Minutes)
- Welcome the children and explain that today's lesson is about numbers!
- Show the number cards (1 to 5) and have the children repeat the numbers after you.
- Engage the children by asking if they can point to the numbers in the classroom (e.g., on clocks or books).
Main Activity (10 Minutes)
Activity 1: Number Recognition (5 Minutes)
- Display the number cards on the ground or wall.
- Call out a number, and ask children to stand by the correct number card.
- Encourage discussion: "Who can show us how many fingers for number 3?"
Activity 2: Counting with Objects (5 Minutes)
- Distribute small objects among the children (e.g., 1 block for number 1, 2 blocks for number 2).
- Ask each child to count their objects out loud as they hold them up.
- Support children by helping them to match their number cards with the corresponding number of objects.
Conclusion (2 Minutes)
- Recap the numbers and the quantities.
- Praise them for their participation and efforts in counting and recognising numbers.
- Ask children to think of different items they can count when they go home.
Homework
Task: Number Hunt
- Choose three numbers between 1 and 5.
- Go on a number hunt around your home or garden and find objects that match the chosen numbers.
- For each number, draw a picture of the object you found and write the number next to it.
Example Answers:
- Number: 2 → Found: 2 apples (draw apples).
- Number: 4 → Found: 4 toy cars (draw toy cars).
- Number: 3 → Found: 3 books (draw books).
Assessment
Monitor the children's participation throughout the lesson to assess their understanding of number recognition and counting. Use observations during the activities to guide future lessons and support individual learning needs.
This lesson plan adheres to the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and is designed to be engaging and interactive, fostering a love for numbers and mathematics from an early age.
