Subject: English

Year Level: 6

Duration: 45 Minutes

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Materials Needed

Introduction (10 Minutes)

  1. Warm-Up Activity:
Start the lesson with a quick discussion about sentences. Ask students:

    • What is a sentence?
    • Why do we use sentences?
  2. Definition:
Define a sentence as a group of words that express a complete thought. Write the definition on the whiteboard for visual reinforcement.

  3. Components of a Sentence:
    Introduce the main components:

    • Subject: Who or what the sentence is about.
    • Predicate: What the subject does or what is done to the subject.
    • Objects: Who or what receives the action.

Direct Instruction (15 Minutes)

  1. Simple Sentences:

    • Explain that a simple sentence contains a subject and a predicate.
    • Example: "The cat sleeps."
    • Write a few examples on the board and highlight subjects and predicates.
  2. Compound Sentences:

    • Introduce compound sentences as sentences that combine two independent clauses using conjunctions.
    • Explain common conjunctions: and, but, or, so, for, nor, and yet.
    • Example: "The cat sleeps, and the dog barks."
    • Highlight the use of a comma before the conjunction in compound sentences.
  3. Activity:

    • Using sentence cards, have students identify and categorise different components of both simple and compound sentences.

Guided Practice (10 Minutes)

  1. Group Activity:
    • Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a set of sentence cards.
    • Instruct them to create both simple and compound sentences using the provided cards.
    • Each group will write their sentences on a piece of paper and prepare to share with the class.

Independent Practice (5 Minutes)

  1. Worksheet:
    • Distribute worksheets featuring a mix of activities:
      • Identifying sentence components
      • Correcting fragments and run-on sentences
      • Creating their own compound sentences using prompts.

Conclusion (5 Minutes)

  1. Review:

    • Go over the key points of the lesson. Ask a few students to share their sentences from the group activity.
    • Emphasise the importance of using proper sentence structure in writing.
  2. Exit Ticket:

    • Have each student write one simple and one compound sentence on a sticky note to hand in before leaving the class.
