Engaging Start to Market Research Lesson

Introduction: The Market Mystery Box

Objective:

Kick off the lesson on Market Research with an interactive activity that engages students and encourages them to think critically about consumer needs and preferences.

Activity Overview:

Create a “Market Mystery Box” filled with various everyday items, each carefully selected to represent different products or services (e.g., a snack, a gadget, a book, etc.). The box should contain 5-7 items, each representing a different market segment or demographic.

Steps to Execute the Activity:

  1. Preparation:

    • Gather a selection of ordinary items that could be sold in a market (snacks, toys, stationery, etc.).
    • Place these items in a box that’s opaque (not see-through).
  2. Getting Students Involved:

    • As students enter the classroom, show them the “Market Mystery Box” and pique their curiosity by saying, “Today, your task is to become market researchers. In this box are products from different markets, and your mission is to uncover the potential target audience for each item!”
  3. The Mystery Unfolds:

    • Divide the class into small groups of 4-5 students.
    • Each group will take turns blindfolding one of their members and asking them to draw an item from the box without looking.
    • The group must then discuss and hypothesise:
      • What the product is.
      • Who might buy it, and why?
      • What market segment it fits into (age, interests, income level, etc.).
  4. Sharing and Discussion:

    • After all groups have drawn their items, allow each group to present their findings to the class.
    • Encourage other groups to ask questions or provide additional insights about the target market.
  5. Connecting to the Lesson:

    • Conclude the activity by summarising how understanding consumer needs and preferences is crucial in market research. Explain that today’s lesson will delve into various market research methods that can help determine the best approaches to meet consumer demands.

Transition:

Segue into the main lesson by highlighting the importance of data collection in understanding market segments and consumer behaviour. Use this activity as a springboard to introduce the concepts of surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observational research.

This engaging start will not only energise your students but also establish a practical context for exploring the essentials of market research.
