Lesson Starter: Exploring Protective Behaviours

Introduction

Welcome, Year 6! Today, we're going to dive into a very important topic: Protective Behaviours. These are skills and strategies that help us keep safe and make informed decisions in our everyday lives. But before we jump into our lesson, I have a fun and engaging activity to kick things off!

Activity: "The Safety Shield"

Purpose

This activity will help you think about the different ways we can protect ourselves and understand the concept of protective behaviours.

Materials Needed

Instructions

  1. Draw Your Safety Shield:

    • On your piece of paper or whiteboard, draw a large shield shape. This will be our "Safety Shield."
  2. Brainstorm Protective Behaviours:

    • Think about situations where you might need to protect yourself. For example, it could be at school, at home, or while playing outside.
    • On the shield, write down or draw symbols representing different protective behaviours you can use in those situations.
  3. Share Your Ideas:

    • Once everyone has contributed to the Safety Shield, we’ll have a class discussion. Each student can share one idea they came up with and explain why it’s important for staying safe.
  4. Reflection:

    • After the discussion, take a moment to write down one protective behaviour that you feel is the most important for you personally. Why do you think this behaviour will help you?

Conclusion

By creating our Safety Shield, we've started to visualise the various ways we can protect ourselves. In today’s lesson, we’ll explore these ideas further, learn about the importance of being aware, and discuss how to speak up when we feel unsafe.

Let’s get started!
