Year 2 Reading Lesson Plan
Lesson Title: Exploring Characters in Stories
Duration: 30 minutes
Year Level: Year 2
Learning Objective
Students will be able to identify and describe the main character in a story, discussing their traits, motivations, and journeys.
Required Materials
- A copy of a selected short story or picture book with a clear main character (e.g. "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Character traits worksheet
- Pencils and crayons
Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Engage students by asking them about their favourite characters from different stories.
- Write a few character names on the whiteboard and ask the students to describe what makes these characters memorable.
Read Aloud (10 minutes)
- Read the selected story aloud to the students, ensuring to use expressive voice and intonation to engage them.
- Pause at key points to highlight the main character’s actions and decisions.
Discussion (5 minutes)
- After reading, lead a group discussion:
- Who is the main character?
- What do they look like?
- What are some traits of the character (e.g. brave, clever, funny)?
- Why do you think they acted that way?
Activity (5 minutes)
- Distribute the character traits worksheet.
- Ask students to draw the main character and write down three traits that describe them.
- Encourage them to think about how these traits helped the character in the story.
Sharing (5 minutes)
- Invite students to share their drawings and descriptions with a partner or the class.
- Circulate and listen to their discussions, providing feedback and encouragement.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Summarise the key points of the lesson, emphasising the importance of understanding characters to enhance comprehension of stories.
- End with a short reflection question: “How would the story be different if the main character had different traits?”
Assessment
- Observe students during discussions and sharing to assess their understanding of character traits.
- Collect worksheets to assess individual comprehension and creativity.
Extensions
- For students who grasp the concept quickly, provide them with a different short story and ask them to identify the main character’s traits on their own.
- Incorporate a writing activity where students create their own character and write a brief story about them.
Note to the Teacher
Ensure that the selected story is age-appropriate and contains opportunities to discuss a variety of traits. Adjust your reading pace to accommodate students’ needs throughout the lesson.
This lesson plan aligns with the Australian Curriculum, focusing on literacy goals such as understanding and interpreting texts and engaging in discussions that deepen comprehension skills.
