Lesson Introduction: Discovering Colours in German!

Objective

To introduce Year 1 students to the German vocabulary for colours through an engaging and interactive activity.

Introduction Activity: "The Colour Quest"

Hook: A Magical Journey

Begin the lesson with a short story to capture the students’ attention:

Once upon a time in a bright and colourful forest, there lived magical creatures called "Farbenfreunde" (Colour Friends).
Every morning, they would wake up in their vibrant homes and share their favourite colours. However, one day, they discovered that their colours had gone missing! They need our help to find and name them in German!

Let’s Get Started!

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Colourful cards (red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
    • A large, empty map of the “Farbenwald” (Colour Forest)
    • Music for a fun background atmosphere
  2. Set the Scene:

    • Show the students the colour cards and explain that each card represents a different colour the “Farbenfreunde” loves.
    • Play cheerful music as you point to the map of the “Farbenwald”.
  3. The Colour Hunt:

    • Ask the students to guess what colours are on the cards. For each colour they guess correctly, say the name of the colour in German and have them repeat it. For example:
      • “Rot!” (Red)
      • “Blau!” (Blue)
      • “Gelb!” (Yellow)
      • “Grün!” (Green)
  4. Interactive Movement:

    • As you call out each colour, have the students stand up and make a corresponding gesture or noise related to the colour (e.g., flap arms for “blue” to mimic water, stomp feet for “red” to mimic a drum). This will energise the students and reinforce the vocabulary.

Transition to Lesson Content

After the Colour Hunt, tell the students that they will now help the “Farbenfreunde” by creating their own colourful artworks using the colours they learned in German. They'll share their creations and use the German words for each colour!

This engaging start not only creates excitement, but also lays the foundation for learning the German vocabulary for colours in a fun and memorable way!
