Engage students’ imaginations and introduce the concept of character development in storytelling.
Materials Needed:
Begin by inviting students to sit in a circle. Explain that today, they will embark on a journey through the world of characters in stories.
Pull out a large poster of a hot-air balloon drawn on the board. This balloon represents the adventures that characters can take us on in literature.
Tell the students that each time they learn about a new character, they are adding a little lift to the hot-air balloon:
Invite students to think about different characters they've encountered in books, movies, or their own imaginations. Give each student a colorful sticky note and have them write down a character name and one word that describes that character.
Once done, have students stick their notes around the hot-air balloon drawing on the board. As the sticky notes fill the poster, emphasize how each character adds to the story's adventure and richness.
Lead a brief discussion about character traits:
Wrap up by explaining that as they explore stories throughout the lesson, they will dive deeper into understanding what makes characters come alive. Remind them that every great adventure begins with a compelling character, and today's lesson will help them create and explore these colorful characters in their own writing!
This engaging start will not only capture the students' attention but also set the tone for an interactive and purposeful exploration of character development in storytelling.
