Welcome, young mathematicians! Today, we are going to embark on a fun and exciting adventure to discover the concept of area. By the end of our lesson, you will understand what area is and how to measure it using square centimetres (cm²).
To kick things off, let’s play a little game with the Mystery Box! Here’s how it works:
Gather Around: Form a circle on the carpet. I have a special box that contains different shapes made from cardboard.
Shape Reveals: I will one by one pull out different shapes from the box. They could be squares, rectangles, or even some special shapes!
Guess the Area: As I take out each shape, I want you to think about how much space that shape would take up on a flat surface. I will ask you to estimate if you think the shape has:
Visualising Area: After you share your guesses, we will measure the area of each shape using square centimetres. I will help you cut out squares of 1 cm x 1 cm from paper to place over the shapes.
After our Mystery Box activity, we will split into small groups. Each group will receive a large piece of paper and some colourful markers. Your task will be to create your own shape and calculate its area using square centimetres.
Finally, we will come back together as a class to share your creations and what you learned about the area of your shapes!
By the end of this lesson, you’ll see just how big or small different areas can be, and your minds will be buzzing with new ideas! So grab your thinking caps, and let’s dive into the wonderful world of area together!
Get ready for a fun-filled lesson that will make you see the world through the eyes of a mathematician! 🌟
