To engage Year 8 students in the exploration of their creativity through a hands-on activity that encourages collaboration and imaginative thinking.
Imagine walking into your art classroom, where the atmosphere is buzzing with excitement and curiosity. Instead of starting with a traditional lecture, we’re diving straight into creativity with an interactive activity called the Mystery Box of Inspiration.
Mystery Boxes: Prepare several boxes (you can use shoeboxes) and fill each one with a variety of items. These can include:
Set the Scene: Arrange the boxes in a central spot in the classroom and create an inviting atmosphere with posters of famous artworks and calming music.
Gather Students: Ask students to form small groups of 3-4.
Reveal the Boxes: Introduce the Mystery Box of Inspiration. Explain that they are about to embark on an artistic journey, where each box holds secrets ready to be unveiled.
Exploration Time: Give each group a few minutes to open their box and explore the materials inside. Encourage them to discuss their initial thoughts on how these items could inspire artwork.
Creative Creation: After exploring, each group must choose three items from their box and create a quick sketch or prototype of an artwork that incorporates these materials.
Gather the students back together and allow each group to share their ideas and sketches. Discuss the following:
Wrap up the lesson by discussing how art can be shaped by various influences — be it materials, collaboration, or inspiration from the world around us. Emphasise that creativity often comes from exploration and experimentation, setting the stage for the rest of the lesson, where they will have the opportunity to create their final artworks based on their sketches.
By starting with this engaging and tactile activity, students will feel a sense of ownership and excitement, paving the way for a productive art lesson ahead!
