Today, we will embark on a fun math adventure to explore numbers and counting! By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and write numbers 1 through 20!
Gather around, young mathematicians! I have an exciting story to share with you.
One sunny morning in Numberland, the friendly Number Fairy lost her magical number map! This map helped the numbers find their way to the Countathon Festival, where all the numbers came together to party.
But oh no! Without the map, some numbers are missing, and we need your help to find them! Can we work together to uncover the secret of the missing numbers?
Let’s start our adventure with a scavenger hunt! I’ll hand out number cards from 1 to 20. You will look around the classroom to find objects that match your number.
For example:
When you find your items, we’ll share them with the class.
After our scavenger hunt, let’s create a giant number line on the floor! We will use tape to stick numbers on the ground in order.
I need your help to stand on your number and say it out loud. Can anyone jump to their number when I call it out? This way, we’ll have all our numbers back in their rightful place!
In your drawing books, draw your favourite number and decorate it with fun colours! You might want to add something that has that number of items in real life. For instance, if you choose the number 3, draw 3 flowers or 3 stars!
At the end of our lesson, we will gather to sing the “Number Song” together. Let's celebrate how we helped the Number Fairy find her lost numbers!
Remember, mathematics is everywhere around us! You all did a fantastic job today in our quest to help the Number Fairy. Keep counting and exploring numbers every day!
And there you have it! A creative and engaging way to kick off a Year 1 mathematics lesson focused on counting and numbers in a fun, storytelling manner!
