Today, we're going to embark on an exciting journey to find out why authors write! Understanding an author’s purpose is like being a detective—every book holds clues that help us figure it out.
Mystery Box Reveal: Gather the students in a circle and present the Enchanted Book Box. Tell them it’s filled with special books that hold magical secrets about why authors write.
Make It Interactive: Invite students to guess what might be inside the box. Allow volunteers to share what they think an author’s purpose could be. Some may say “to tell a story,” “to share facts,” or “to convince people.”
The Grand Unveiling: Slowly open the box and reveal the three books. Describe each book briefly:
Setting Expectations: Explain that today, we’re going to investigate each book to discover the author’s purpose behind writing it. Each student will take notes about what they think the author is trying to do with each book.
Group Discussion: After exploring the books, gather the students again to discuss their findings. What did they think the author’s purpose was for each book?
Writing Exercise: Have them choose one of the books and write a few sentences explaining the author’s purpose based on their notes.
By designing the lesson this way, we’ll not only capture the students’ attention at the beginning, but we’ll also activate their critical thinking skills as they dive deeper into understanding author’s purpose in a fun and engaging way! Happy Reading! 📚✨
