Fun with Fractions: A Tasty Introduction

Objective

Today, we’re going to dive into the delicious world of fractions! By the end of this lesson, you will understand what fractions are and how they are used in our everyday lives.

Warm-Up Activity: Fraction Feast

What You’ll Need:

Steps:

  1. Draw Your Plate: Start by drawing a large circle on your paper plate. This represents a pizza!

  2. Divide Your Pizza: Use your crayons to divide your pizza into equal slices. You can create:

    • 2 slices (half a pizza)
    • 4 slices (quarters)
    • 8 slices (eighths)

Make sure that the slices are equal!

  3. Decorate Your Pizza: Colour in your pizza with various toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, vegetables, etc.). You can even use more than one topping per slice!

  4. Think About Fractions: As you create your pizza, think about the different fractions. For example:

    • If you coloured one slice out of two, that’s 1/2 of your pizza.
    • If you coloured three slices out of four, that’s 3/4 of your pizza.

Discussion Points

After everyone has created their delicious pizza plates, we’ll come together and discuss:

Conclusion

This is just the beginning of understanding fractions. Throughout our lesson, we’ll explore more ways to use fractions in exciting and interactive activities.
