Students will explore the principles of sustainable design and technology while brainstorming and prototyping their original product ideas that address a community need.
Activity Title: "Mystery Box Challenge"
Set the Scene: Start by dimming the lights in the classroom and holding the mystery box while explaining, "Inside this box are materials that have the potential to change the world. They may seem like trash to some, but they can become treasures in the hands of innovative designers."
Mystery Box Reveal: One at a time, pull out items from the box and display them to the students. Encourage students to think about how these items might be reimagined. Ask questions like:
Group Brainstorm: Divide students into small groups and give them 5 minutes to brainstorm product ideas using at least three items from the mystery box. Each group should discuss:
Share Ideas: After brainstorming, have each group present their product idea on the whiteboard. They should highlight the innovative aspects and the sustainable features of their designs.
Reflection with Sticky Notes: Conclude this engaging introduction by handing out sticky notes. Ask students to write one takeaway or insight from the brainstorming session and stick it on a designated "Ideas Wall." This allows for reflection and visualisation of their collective creativity.
With excitement in the air and creative juices flowing, segue into the main lesson by discussing the principles of sustainable design, emphasising the importance of innovation and ecological responsibility in technology and design.
Students will understand the role of creativity in problem-solving and the significance of sustainability in their design work, setting a solid foundation for subsequent lessons where they will develop their product prototypes.
