To engage Year 3 students in understanding money concepts, including recognising coins and notes, simple addition and subtraction with money, and making change.
Begin the lesson with an exciting visual prop: a large, clear jar filled with various coins and a few notes. This "Magical Money Jar" will serve as the focal point for the lesson.
Gather the students in a circle around the jar, and say:
"Imagine this jar is a treasure chest filled with shiny coins and colourful notes. Each week, this magical jar gives us a special challenge! Today, we are going to embark on an adventure to learn how to use this treasure to buy items in a mystical marketplace!
But first, I need your help. We have to find out what’s inside the jar. Let’s work together to identify the different coins and notes. Can anyone tell me what they see?"
Coin Identification: Invite students to come up one by one to pick a coin from the jar.
Group Discussion: After identifying each coin, discuss the following:
After interacting with the jar, smoothly transition into the lesson by saying:
"Great job, everyone! Now that we know what coins and notes we have, let's learn how to add and subtract them, so we can make purchases just like real shoppers in our very own magical marketplace!"
This engaging introduction not only captures the students’ attention but also allows them to actively participate in the lesson from the very beginning, creating a fun learning atmosphere focused on money.
