Learning Objectives

- Shot puts (3-4 kg for Key Stage 3 and 4-5 kg for Key Stage 4)

Introduction (5 Minutes)

Warm-Up Activities
- Begin with a dynamic warm-up including jogging, arm circles, and leg stretches to prepare students for physical activity.
- Explain the importance of a proper warm-up to prevent injury when performing throwing activities.

Introduction to Shot Put
- Briefly explain the history of shot put, its Olympic status, and its significance in athletics.
- Discuss the basic rules, including the throwing area boundaries and foul throws.
Skill Development (15 Minutes)
Technique Demonstration (5 Minutes)
- Stance and Grip
- Demonstrate the correct shot put grip (placing the shot on the base of the fingers starting with the shot resting against the neck).
- Show the stance: feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.
- Demonstrate the movement of the throw: the push from the legs, the rotation of the hips, and the final extension of the arm.
Student Practice (10 Minutes)
- Partner Work
- Students pair up to practice the stance and grip, offering each other feedback.
- One partner throws while the other observes technique; swap roles after a set time.
- Circulate the area offering guidance and support, focusing on key points of technique.
Activity Session (7 Minutes)
- Throwing Practice
- Set up individual stations for each student with marked throwing areas.
- Allow students to perform a series of 3 practice throws each, aiming for distance while maintaining proper technique.
- Measure the throws using a measuring tape, and encourage friendly competition for the longest throw.
Cool Down & Reflection (3 Minutes)

- Lead students through a short cool-down including stretching of the arms, shoulders, and legs. Emphasise the importance of stretching after physical activity.

- Gather students to reflect on what they learned about shot put techniques.
- Ask questions such as: "What did you find most challenging?" and "How can you improve your technique further?"
Assessment
- Observe students during practice for the correct stance and technique.
