Jumping into Shapes!

Objective:

To introduce young learners to basic shapes in a fun, interactive way that engages their curiosity and encourages movement.

Lesson Introduction

Welcome to the Shape Adventure!

Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going on a special adventure to discover the magical world of shapes! Are you ready to jump, slide, and wiggle your way into learning?

The Shape Hunt!

  1. Gather the children in a circle and tell them about a secret treasure: Shapes! Explain that shapes are all around us, and today they will become ‘Shape Detectives’ on a mission to find them!

  2. Introduce Shape Characters:

    • Circle the Clever: Round and round, with no edges!
    • Square the Brave: Four equal sides, just like a box!
    • Triangle the Tiny: Three sides that make a point!
    • Rectangle the Reliable: Four sides, but two are longer!

Show colourful pictures of each shape as you introduce them.

Movement Activity: Shape Explorers

  1. Shape Movement Game:

    • Ask the children to stand up and follow your movements. Each time you call out a shape, demonstrate a fun action that resembles the shape (e.g.,
      • Circle: Spin around in a circle.
      • Square: Make a square shape with your arms, stretching both up and out.
      • Triangle: Create a triangle with your body by lifting one arm and one leg in the air.
      • Rectangle: Stretch arms out wide with feet apart like a rectangle!).
  2. Shape Freeze Dance: Play a short song and encourage the children to dance freely. When the music stops, call out a shape. They must freeze and make that shape with their bodies!

Closing the Introduction

Now that we've jumped, danced, and learned about our shape friends, we are ready to explore even more shapes around us! In our next activity, we will be on a Shape Hunt in our classroom to find objects that match our shape characters. Are you excited? Let’s go!
