Welcome, Little Mathematicians!

Today, we are going to embark on a fun adventure into the world of data! You might be wondering what "data" is. Well, data is simply information we collect, organise, and use to help us learn more about the things around us.

Engaging Hook: The Sweet Treat Survey

To kick off our lesson, let’s start with something sweet and fun! We are going to conduct a mini survey called the “Sweet Treat Survey”!

What You'll Need:

• A selection of small sweet treats (e.g., gummy bears, chocolate coins, lollipops, and jelly beans)
• A large piece of paper or a whiteboard
• Colourful markers

Step 1: Conduct the Survey

1. Ask Each Student: "Which sweet treat do you like best?"

2. Record the Votes: As each classmate shares their favourite treat, we will colour a box for each type of sweet on our big piece of paper or whiteboard.

   Example:

   • ❎ Gummy Bears
   • ❎ Chocolate Coins
   • ❎ Lollipops
   • ❎ Jelly Beans

Step 2: Count and Compare

Once we have everyone’s votes, we will:

• Count how many students chose each type of sweet.
• Fill each box with the number of students who voted for each treat.

Step 3: Discussion Time!

After we’ve completed our survey, we will sit together and discuss:

• Which treat received the most votes?
• Which treat received the least votes?
• How many students voted in total?
