Getting Started with Data in Year 1 Mathematics

Introduction to the Lesson

Welcome, Little Mathematicians!

Today, we are going to embark on a fun adventure into the world of data! You might be wondering what "data" is. Well, data is simply information we collect, organise, and use to help us learn more about the things around us.

Engaging Hook: The Sweet Treat Survey

To kick off our lesson, let’s start with something sweet and fun! We are going to conduct a mini survey called the “Sweet Treat Survey”!

What You'll Need:

Step 1: Conduct the Survey

  1. Ask Each Student: "Which sweet treat do you like best?"

  2. Record the Votes: As each classmate shares their favourite treat, we will colour a box for each type of sweet on our big piece of paper or whiteboard.

    Example:

    • ❎ Gummy Bears
    • ❎ Chocolate Coins
    • ❎ Lollipops
    • ❎ Jelly Beans

Step 2: Count and Compare

Once we have everyone’s votes, we will:

Step 3: Discussion Time!

After we’ve completed our survey, we will sit together and discuss:

Conclusion: Learning Through Data

Today, we learned that data helps us understand what people like! As we explore more about data, we will look at ways to use it to answer questions and make decisions.

Remember!

Data is everywhere, and collecting it can be exciting, just like our Sweet Treat Survey! Now, let’s open our minds and prepare to dive deeper into the data world today. Are you ready? Let’s go!
