To engage students' curiosity and interest in the French language by encouraging them to explore vocabulary in a fun and interactive way.
As students enter the classroom, have the Mystery Box placed at the front. Cover it with a cloth or paper to keep its contents a secret. Greet the students warmly and create an atmosphere of intrigue.
Explanation: Tell the students that today they are going on a "word adventure" in French. Explain that inside the box are several objects or flashcards, each representing a different French word they will learn during the lesson.
Engagement: Invite each student to take turns drawing an object from the box without revealing it to the class. Once they have an object, they will give three clues about what it might be in French (using "C'est..." and "Ça ressemble à...") while the rest of the class guesses the word.
Example: For a toy car, they might say:
Once all the items have been revealed and guessed, transition into the lesson by highlighting how crucial vocabulary is when communicating in French. By engaging students' senses and encouraging participation, they’ll already feel a connection to the words they’ve just uncovered. This activity will also set a positive tone and foster teamwork.
The Mystery Box of Words is not only a captivating opening for a French lesson, but it also encourages creativity, teamwork, and active participation. Using an interactive approach to introduce vocabulary makes learning more memorable and enjoyable, setting the stage for further exploration of the French language.
