Today, we will transform our classroom into this lively marketplace, and you’ll become the master merchants!

Activity: The Merchant's Challenge

Materials Needed:
- Small counters (these can be buttons, blocks, or any available classroom materials)
- Pre-made "marketplace cards" with different items and their prices (for example:
  - Apple: 3 counters
  - Fabric: 5 counters
  - Trinket: 7 counters)
Instructions:
- Role Assignments: Divide the class into small groups of merchants (3-4 students per group). Each group will represent a stall.
- Setting Up Stalls: Each group will create a mini stall using the materials to represent the items they are selling.
- Trading Simulation: Allow the groups to set prices for their items in counters. Then, assign a set amount of counters to each group. They will have to negotiate trades with other groups, using arithmetic to calculate totals, change, and remaining counters.
- Math Journal Entry: After the trading activity, each student will write a short reflection in their math journals. They should include:
  - One trade they made
  - The arithmetic calculations involved in that trade (showing addition or subtraction)
