To engage Year 6 students in the topic of reasoning and problem solving through a fun and interactive mystery puzzle.
Begin the lesson by dimming the lights slightly and playing some mysterious background music (optional). Present the students with an oversized envelope or box that is locked or sealed.
Teacher's Script: "Good morning, everyone! Today we are embarking on a thrilling adventure. Inside this magical box lies a treasure map that will lead us to hidden mathematical treasures. However, to unlock this box, we must first solve a series of mysterious puzzles that test our reasoning and problem-solving skills!"
Present the Mystery:
Creating Buzz:
Hurdles to Overcome:
Hand out the first puzzle to each group. Set a timer for excitement and let them know that the team that unlocks the treasure box first will earn a special 'Math Magician' badge!
After the teams have had some time to work on the puzzles (about 15-20 minutes), gather the class and discuss the various strategies they employed. This leads seamlessly into the main lesson on reasoning and problem solving:
Teacher's Script: "Now that we have put our minds to the test, let's discuss the strategies you used! What did you notice about the problems? How did you reason through the clues? The skills we practised today will help us tackle even more complex mathematical challenges."
By beginning the lesson with an engaging treasure hunt, you not only create excitement but also foster collaboration and enhance critical thinking among the students. They'll be eager to dive deeper into the world of reasoning and problem solving in mathematics!
