Objective: Introduce young learners to Aboriginal art and culture through a hands-on, engaging experience that fosters creativity and cultural appreciation.
Let's start our lesson by finding a comfortable spot together. As you sit in a circle, I want you all to close your eyes for a moment and imagine a magical land filled with vibrant colours and incredible creatures. This land is rich with stories and ancient traditions.
Now, let me introduce you to a very special symbol in Aboriginal culture—the Rainbow Serpent. The Rainbow Serpent is a powerful being that many Aboriginal people believe created rivers, mountains, and the beautiful earth we live on. Just like rainbows in the sky, the Rainbow Serpent shows us that nature is full of beautiful colours.
Let’s take a moment to talk about rainbows!
Shape It Out: Using the coloured paper, cut out a wavy shape for your Rainbow Serpent. Remember, it can be as long or as curvy as you like!
Add the Colours: Think about the colours of the rainbow as you glue them onto your serpent. You can be as creative as you want!
Bring It to Life: Once your serpent is decorated, use markers or crayons to add patterns or designs, just like Aboriginal artists!
Once everyone has completed their Rainbow Serpents, we will gather again in our circle. Each of you will have the chance to share your creation and tell us about the colours and patterns you chose!
In our next lesson, we will explore more about Aboriginal stories and symbols through art. Remember, just like the Rainbow Serpent, your creativity is powerful and can bring beautiful stories to life!
Let’s dive into our creative journey and appreciate the art of storytelling through colours and shapes!
This lesson plan not only introduces children to Aboriginal art but also promotes discussion and interpersonal skills, which are essential at this age. Happy creating!
