Lesson Plan: Place Value
Subject: Mathematics
Grade: Year 1
Duration: 30 minutes
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Understand the concept of place value in two-digit numbers.
- Identify the value of digits in the tens and ones places.
- Represent numbers using base ten blocks.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Base ten blocks (tens and ones)
- Number cards (0-99)
- Worksheets for practice
- Interactive Smartboard (optional)
Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin the lesson by engaging students with a short discussion:
- Ask the students, "What do you think place value means?"
- Use simple language to explain that place value tells us the value of a digit in a number based on its position.
- Provide examples of simple numbers, like 12, to illustrate the concepts of ‘tens’ and ‘ones’.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
Explain Place Value
- Tens Place: Explain that the first position (when reading from right to left) is the ones place, and the second position is the tens place.
- Visual Aid: Draw the numbers on the whiteboard (e.g., 23) and label the digits as follows:
Demonstrate Using Base Ten Blocks
- Show students how to represent the number 23 using base ten blocks:
- Use 2 groups of ten blocks for '20'.
- Add 3 single blocks for '3'.
- Invite students to come up and represent different two-digit numbers using the base ten blocks.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Activity 1: Place Value Identification
- Distribute number cards to each student.
- Ask them to read their number aloud and identify the tens and ones.
- Example: For the number 45, the student should say, "4 is in the tens place, and 5 is in the ones place."
Activity 2: Building Numbers
- In small groups, provide base ten blocks and ask students to create specific two-digit numbers called out by the teacher.
- Encourage them to share their work with the group and discuss their reasoning.
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Hand out worksheets that include:
- Identifying the tens and ones in given numbers.
- Drawing base ten blocks to represent specific numbers.
Students will complete these worksheets individually. Teachers should circulate to assist students as needed.
Closure (5 minutes)
- Recap the lesson by asking a few students to share their answers from the worksheet.
- Reinforce the key concepts of place value and remind students how understanding place value helps with number sense.
Assessment
- Collect worksheets to assess students’ understanding of the place value concept.
- Observe students during group activities to assess their ability to work collaboratively and apply knowledge.
Extension Activities (optional)
- For students in need of a challenge, provide larger numbers (e.g., 56, 74) and ask them to break these down into tens and ones.
- Introduce a fun game where students can match numbers to their corresponding base ten block representations.
