Grade Level: Reception / Kindergarten
Duration: 30 minutes
Topic: Numbers
Curriculum Link: Number and Algebra (New Zealand Curriculum)
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Recognise and name numbers from 1 to 10.
- Count objects accurately to match the corresponding number.
- Understand the concept of quantity.
Materials Needed

- Picture books that focus on numbers (optional)
- Music player for songs
Lesson Outline
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by gathering students in a circle.
- Show number cards and ask the students if they can name the numbers.
- Engage students by asking questions like, “What is your favourite number? Why?”
2. Counting Activity (10 minutes)
- Distribute counters to each student.
- Ask students to choose a number card and then count out the corresponding number of counters.
- Encourage them to say the number aloud as they place down each counter (e.g. “One, two, three…”).
- Walk around to assist and ensure accurate counting.
3. Number Songs (5 minutes)
- Sing a counting song (e.g., “Five Little Ducks” or “Ten in the Bed”).
- Encourage students to use their fingers to represent the numbers in the song.
4. Group Activity (5 minutes)
- Divide students into small groups.
- Provide each group with a set of number cards and a mixed collection of counters.
- Ask them to match the number cards with the correct quantity of counters as a team.
- Encourage collaboration and discussion among students.
5. Closing (5 minutes)
- Regroup and ask students to share what they enjoyed during the lesson.
- Reinforce what they learned by asking, “What number did you count the most?”
- End with a fun number-related story or another counting song if time allows.
Assessment
- Observe students during the counting activity to assess their ability to count accurately and match numbers with quantities.
- Listen to group discussions to see how well they communicate their understanding of numbers.
Extension Activities
- Create a number wall in the classroom where students can add new numbers they learn.
- Introduce simple addition and subtraction using counters for further exploration.
Reflection
After the lesson, reflect on:
- What worked well in helping students understand numbers?
- Were students engaged throughout the activities?
- What adjustments can be made for future lessons on numbers?
This lesson plan aims to create a fun and interactive environment for students to explore the foundational concept of numbers, ensuring it meets the New Zealand educational standards for early childhood mathematics.
