Lesson Plan: Bear Hunt
Description
Welcome to our exciting Bear Hunt adventure! In this lesson, we will take our young explorers on a journey through various environments, inspired by the beloved story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt." Through imaginative play, language activities, and physical movement, students will discover the joy of storytelling while developing their English skills.
Language Conventions
Throughout the lesson, we will focus on key language elements such as:
- Rhyming Words: Identifying and using rhymes from the story, such as "swishy swashy" and "splash splosh."
- Repeating Phrases: Encouraging repetition to build confidence in speaking and listening skills.
- Descriptive Language: Expanding vocabulary by describing the different environments we encounter on our bear hunt ("thick, oozy mud" or "swaying tall grass").
Settings
We will explore five different settings, as inspired by the story:
- Tall Grass: Students will describe the feeling of tall, swaying grass; how it moves, and its colour.
- Deep, Cold River: We will imagine the sensation of cold water as we "splash" through with our feet.
- Muddy Path: Students can share how it feels to walk through sticky mud and the sounds it makes under our feet.
- Snowy, White Field: Here, we will feel the texture of fluffy snow, making "swish, swash" sounds.
- Dark Forest: As we tiptoe, we will describe the shadows and the quiet that surrounds us before meeting the bear.
Physical Activity
To bring our lesson to life, we will incorporate physical activities linked to each environment. We'll:
- Sway side to side while walking through the tall grass.
- Jump and make splashing sounds in our deep, cold river.
- Stomp and get stuck in the muddy path.
- Slide our feet as we move through the snowy field.
- Tiptoe quietly in the dark forest to build excitement and suspense!
Exploring Different Environments
After our bear hunt, we will engage in a discussion about different environments beyond our story. This discussion will encompass:
- Australian Environments: Explore the unique Australian landscapes, such as deserts, rainforests, and coastal regions.
- Animal Habitats: Talk about various Australian animals that live in these environments and how they adapt to their surroundings.
- Creative Extension: Invite students to draw their favourite part of the bear hunt or one of the Australian environments.
This lesson plan aims to foster language development and physical coordination through fun, engaging storytelling and active participation while exploring the Australian context. Let's get ready for our bear hunt adventure!
