Exciting Start to Our Maths Lesson: Bar Graph Adventure!

Introduction

Good morning, Year 1! Today, we are going to embark on a colourful adventure into the world of bar graphs! But before we dive deep, let’s set the stage with a fun little activity!

The Fruit Basket Surprise 🥳🍎🍌

1. Gather Around

First, let’s gather in a circle and bring our imagination to life. I have a surprise fruit basket filled with different fruits: apples, bananas, oranges, and grapes. Each of you will get a chance to pick a fruit from the basket, but, shhh, don’t tell anyone what you picked just yet!

2. Pick a Fruit!

One by one, I will pass around the basket. When it’s your turn, you will reach in and select a fruit. Remember, keep it a secret! Once everyone has chosen, we will reveal our fruits together.

3. Show and Tell 🗣️

Now, let’s reveal our fruits! As I call your name, please stand up and show us the fruit you picked. Let’s count how many of each fruit we have together!

4. Creating Our Bar Graph 📊

Using our selections, we’re going to create a giant bar graph on the classroom whiteboard. Each fruit will have its own colour-coded bar. I’ll need your help to decide how high to draw each bar based on the number of each fruit we have.

5. Discuss

Once our bar graph is complete, we will talk about what the graph shows us. Which fruit was the most popular? Which one was the least?

Conclusion

By the end of our lesson, not only will we have created a beautiful bar graph together, but we will also learn how to read and understand data! Grab your pencils and let’s get started on our bar graph adventure!

Let’s Go! 🎉
